Where did we come from?Find out the evolutionary timeline of a modern day organism
In order to learn about direct ancestry, we were told to go out and choose any species that exists today. We would then find five species that were direct ancestors of that specie. Looking at these, the next step would be to analyze each specie, searching for

TopicsDirect Ancestor
A direct ancestor is a species that a specie is directly descended from. This means that the current specie can trace its lineage to that previous specie. An example would be that your great grandmother is a direct ancestor of you. Finding a direct ancestor of a specie can help explain how those species evolved, the environment, and other information. Common Ancestor
A common ancestor is found when two species have the same direct ancestor. This means that those two species will probably share similar traits, depending on the distance of the common ancestor. An example of a common ancestor would be that your grandmother is a common ancestor between you and your cousin. Evolution and Natural Selection
The theory of evolution was proposed by Charles Darwin in 1859 with the publishing of his book Origin of Species. Since then , it has been developed greatly. The theory states that:
Artificial Selection
Artificial selection is very similar to natural selection, except that favorable traits are determined by humans, not the environment. This means that organisms evolve to fit human needs. An example of such might be dog breeding, where dogs with favorable traits are breed to create offspring with that trait accented. Evidence for Evolution
There are many different types of evidence coming in support of the Theory of Evolution.

Reflection
This project was out of the ordinary, because we were grouped into partners. We were then given a project, and then promptly spent the next two hours trying to figure out how to present our nonexistent results. This was the first of our problems. Our second one arose from the results of our debate. We decided to do a slides presentation, which then grew into an unmanageable tangle of upwards of 50 slides. It would have been advisable to organize them in an orderly fashion and approach them with some of plan in mind. However, despite these setbacks, there were several things that we did that were of note. The effort and time put into this project seems to be above average. Despite the unorganized approach, we managed to complete the project. Our second success stemmed from one of our failures, and was the creative touches that we put on our presentation. This engaged the audience in a way that a typical slides presentation could not. For these reasons, I believe that I am content with the results of this project, but I wish we could have done things a bit differently. |
